Susan Jacobs' practice has a strong basis in drawing, which consistently informs her object making and installation. These processes reference each other and often converge. Combining organic and manufactured materials in natural and built environments, her work is characterised by an exploration and subversion of the character and primary function of selected materials and chosen sites.
Using the space of Utopian Slumps as a material trigger and counterpoint, Ubiquitous Slopes explores ideas of inversion, location and deviation.
Reconstructed from memory, the apex roof of an A-frame holiday cabin in remote New Zealand is imposed into the gallery interior. The structure fuses a resemblance of disparate places.
Up-ending the idea of an economy of space, Ubiquitous Slopes explores the capacity of 'dead space', conflating possibility and inertia.
Susan has exhibited consistently in Melbourne since completing Postgraduate study at the VCA in 1999.
